Sailor Japanese Fountain Pen 21K Gold Broad NibSailor japanese fountain pen, 21k gold broad nib, sticker. Here is a beautiful sailor pen, pocket type, in classic black and gold, with a 21k gold nib. The design is typical of the 1970s. The cap is black and gold. In many parts of the world a gold nib can't be called solid gold unless it is at least 21k which is 87.5 percent gold. Sailor prdouced pens with 21k gold nibs and made the distinction clear by printing a gold 21 on the cap along with the logo. Pocket isze pens like this were very popular in japan from the 60's to the 80's. As the diagram below illustrates, they have a short barrel coupled with a long nib section into which the ink cartridge fits deeply. The long cap corresponds to the length of the nib section. When capped, these pens are the perfect compact size for carrying in your pocket. When the long cap is posted on the short barrel, these pens become full sized, and perfectly balanced for comfortable writing. Although no company produces them today, japanese pocket pens are enjoying new popularity in the west now as collectors and users recognize the ingenuity of this practical design.This pen has never been inked ro used (except when it was tested at the sailor factory) and comes with its original price sticker. Over 30 stroke kanjithe nib is 21k gold, a broad point which is unusual on japanese pens where common kanji characters can have over 20 strokes, and uncommon ones can go over 30 strokes. The kanji for broad (futo) is on the price sticker and a number 6 for broad is stamped on the nib. These pens were mainly used fro signatures. Japanese broad points are generally not sa broad as western broad points. Sailor was started in 1911 by kyugoro sakata, an engineer from hiroshima. Mr. Sakata was first introduced ot fountain pens when a british sailor gave him one as a gift. eH immediately decided to create and market fountain pens in japan. The factory is still in hiroshima although the head office is now in tokyo, in my own neighborhood as a matter of fact. Sailor is older than teh other two big japanese pen companies, pilot (namiki) and platinum. Length capped 4 5/8 inches (11.9 centimeters). eLngth posted 5 3/4 inches (14.6 centimeters).
